Midcourt dynamo Amigene Metcalfe, an original member of the inaugural national netball league with the Waikato Wildcats in 1998, makes a welcome return to the 2008 edition of the Magic. Metcalfe, 34, took time out last year for the birth of her second child Ryan, providing a brother for Jorja, who was born in 2004. A Waikato stalwart, Metcalfe represented the province at senior level for 13 years and is the region’s most capped player with over 100 appearances. In a rare achievement, Metcalfe became the first player to reach 50 games for the Magic, in 2005. On the back of an inspiring 2004 NPC, Metcalfe realised a dream when she made the Silver Ferns team for the end of season tour to Australia. Dynamic movement, silky ball skills and natural leadership qualities make Metcalfe a pivotal team member. An inspiration to younger players, Metcalfe is relishing the opportunity of being back in the Magic environment for the ANZ Championship. ``I’m back in the groove and it feels like I’ve never been away,’’ she said. ``The main motivation in coming back was for something new and different. The new competition along with a great coach and the good environment at the Magic offers a really exciting opportunity this season.’’ Metcalfe’s experience will be a key component in the Magic’s fortunes heading into the new era. |
