The Avis Magic pushed Minor Premiers the GoSweetSpot Mystics all the way before being edged out 53-42 in the final round of the 2026 ANZ Premiership on Saturday.
With the Mystics playing for hosting rights for the Grand Final, the Magic produced a spirited performance and had the competition leaders under pressure for much of the contest before the home side pulled away in the final quarter.
Showing plenty of intent from the opening whistle, the Magic raced to an early lead and refused to allow the Mystics to settle. Defensive pressure across the court disrupted the home side's rhythm, with wing defence Georgie Edgecombe producing a standout performance while Oceane Maihi and Erena Mikaere created headaches with their reach and athleticism.
After trailing 15-7 at quarter time, the Magic responded strongly in the second spell. The visitors opened the quarter with a 5-0 run, steadily chipping away at the deficit and forcing their way back into the contest.
The shooting combination of Saviour Tui and Kate Taylor continued to impress, with Tui outstanding under the post. Her accuracy and composure kept the Magic within touching distance throughout the opening half, helping the visitors trail by just one goal, 23-22, at the main break.
The contest remained an arm-wrestle through the third quarter as both sides traded momentum. The Mystics managed to edge out to a handy lead, but the Magic refused to go away, continuing to apply pressure and create opportunities at both ends of the court.
Sarah Guiney provided valuable impact from the bench, adding energy through the attack end and landing a crucial two-pointer late in the third quarter to keep the visitors within striking distance heading into the final 15 minutes.
While the Mystics eventually found another gear in the closing stages, the Magic can take plenty of confidence from a performance that tested the Minor Premiers and showcased the growth and resilience of the group.
The result brings the curtain down on the 2026 campaign, but the fight, determination and belief shown against the competition's top side provides a strong platform as the Magic continue building towards the future.
